Chantel joined Harrison Catering Services’ apprenticeship scheme in September 2015 working at South Hampstead Junior School. Harrison Catering Services is an independent, family-owned company providing contract catering in multiple sites across the UK. Clients include business and industry and secondary schools.

With no experience in the hospitality industry but a love of cooking, Chantel decided on learning in a real working environment. The company also manages the study of the programme so they know at what pace to progress the theory side for Chantel.

What is a typical day?

I prepare fresh fruit platters, make fresh fruit jellies, put toppings on cakes and prepare the salad bar.

What do you enjoy most about being an apprentice?

Learning how to prepare food and how to cook from scratch. I love being able to contribute more to the team and serving and interacting with the children.

What would you consider to be your strongest quality?

A willingness to learn.

Why would you recommend an apprenticeship to other young people?

It shows you the real experience of working and being independent. You learn new things every day.
