Jake Eades

Name: Jake Eades

Placement: IT Asset & Configuration Manager, Mitchell & Butlers

Apprenticeship: Mitchell & Butlers IT Solution Technician apprenticeship

What attracted you to the apprenticeship?

I was actually attracted to the company first; I am a local lad and M&B has a big reputation in Birmingham. My grandparents also used to work for the brewery many years ago so are big advocates of me working here. I have had various roles in the past, but I really wanted to change direction and begin a career within IT as that is what I enjoy.

What do you like about working for M&B?

There is such a family feel within my team. We have a good laugh, but we know how to switch when it is time to knuckle down!

Why did you choose an apprenticeship scheme over college/university?

I really wanted to learn on the job – I feel that I learn better when I am thrown in the deep end. I went to college and university when I was younger but I found that theoretical learning just was not for me.

What could you say about the support you have received since you have started the apprenticeship scheme with M&B?

Everyone has been amazing. I was apprehensive to ask for help initially but everyone has taken their time to come and sit with me. My line manager Mark has been especially supportive. He has always made sure I have had a lot of time to complete the written side of my apprenticeship and no question has seemed too small or silly.

Congrats on your recent promotion as IT Asset & Configuration Manager, what do you love about your new job?

There are two sides to my role. The data side, which really appeals to my logical and analytical side, as I like things in order and I also deputise for the Change Manager which includes talking about the business strategy and being involved on a higher level. It is amazing to see things change in front of my eyes.

What advice would you give someone who is considering applying for the IT apprenticeship scheme with M&B?

I would say to go for it! I have had a fantastic experience so far. When you are on the apprenticeship, I would say not to be afraid to admit you don’t know the answer, as there is always someone who can help!

What are your future career aspirations?

Though I’m really enjoying my new role at the moment, I would definitely like to progress within M&B in the future. Career progression is important to me – I’ve just not figured out what the next step is yet.

What is your favourite employee benefit?

It has to be the 33% discount we get – I am loving the burgers at All Bar One at the moment!
